Are your computers adequately protected from viruses, spyware and malware in general? We typically receive several infected computers from clients every week. Even though many have at least a running anti-virus program, we often find the programs are no longer up to date, which means they are no longer protected against the latest threats. The reality is that it is no longer sufficient to run just an anti-virus program. Anti-Spyware programs are also necessary and most anti-virus vendors now offer programs that include both, along with other features such as enhanced firewalls, anti-spam, and website advisory protection. We are often asked for our recommendation on the best anti-virus and anti-spyware protection programs. This is a very mature category of software and there are many good offerings available now to choose from. Ranking the various products is almost irrelevant these days because they all are so close in their ability to protect against today's threats. Where they tend to differ is in how efficiently they operate, how resource intensive they are, and how easy or difficult they are to use, customize and/or manage to your specific needs.
Unfortunately, the volume of new malware that roams the internet every day is outstripping the ability of these vendors to keep up. As a result, no single security program available today can prevent all PC infections. So it is more important than ever to be vigilant in your web browsing and email practices, along with keeping the security softare that you have up to date.
